Ankeny to Slater Trail

The 12.5 mile Ankeny to Slater trail is officially open. The wide black-top path is well groomed and markings for crossings are abundant and clear. There’s not much shade until Sheldahl and the inclines are so slight that you can’t tell what a workout you are receiving. The scenery includes an array of birds, garter snakes, wild grasses, corn fields, nostalgic farm buildings and even buffalo.

Sweet…..I really need to buy a bike. It’s just so hard to get my butt out of the canoe and off the streams. Maybe next spring I can find a good deal on 2 bikes for me and the wife. Thanks for the news.

Ah, you can do it. Gotta stretch those legs sometime.

I was wondering if you would give directions to the start of the trail. New trails are fun to explore!

Sure can Nancy. Assuming you want to start in Ankeny, take the First Street exit west into Ankeny off of I-35. Follow First Street west approximately 1-1/4 miles until you see the Fire Station. The trail head and parking are below the water tower next to the Fire Station.

The Fire Station address is 120 NW Ash Drive, Ankeny.

You can also use the Google map on this page in the “Maps” link above on the left. Click on the word Google to open the map. Then, zoom into the end of the blue trail line on the map with your mouse wheel. You can use the Google map to help you create a driving map too.

    Have FUN!
